Hunger Ministries

Hunger and food insecurity is a major and invisible problem of our times. Feeding the hungry is part Christ’s mandate for our work here on earth. As such, the Church of the Holy Redeemer concentrates our outreach efforts toward alleviating food insecurity. A household is considered food secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation. To maximize our resources, we have partnered with two community organizations, who also strive to eliminate hunger: Metro Caring and Totes of Hope.

Our Partnership with Metro Caring

Holy Redeemer supports Metro Caring and its food pantry through donations of food.  Metro Caring provides an ongoing list of food pantry items that are always needed on their website-

Please feel free to bring any contributions you wish to make to Metro Caring to Holy Redeemer on any Sunday morning. Contributions may be left in the church or the parish hall (adjacent to the church). Items will be blessed by the priest before being taken to Metro Caring.

Our Totes of Hope Partnership

Mission: to eliminate hunger in one child, one neighborhood, one community at a time.

Totes of Hope is a food for kids program made possible through the partnership between the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Food Bank of the Rockies, and Whittier ECE-8 School.

In the fall of 2009, the redevelopment team and vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Redeemer endorsed our partnership with the Food Bank of the Rockies and neighborhood school, Gilpin (K-8) located on 2949 California Street. Each week during the school year, we distribute packs of food to two classes of children who have been identified as having a high incidence of tardiness or severe absences.  After the closing of Gilpin Elementary, we have partnered with Whittier School at 2480 Downing Street.

The school is also responsible for monitoring attendance, grades and test scores of the participants during the year in order to show any improvement made through participation in the program. “Totes” programs of this kind have seen significantly improved attendance, test scores, and grades. If we can help just one child, we have succeeded in our mission.

During the holidays we make sure to include special gifts.  On Thanksgiving we try to get coupons for Turkeys for the families as well as providing many of the other Thanksgiving staples like stuffing, cranberry jelly, potatoes and/or yams.  For Christmas break we try to include extra food for the extended amount of time that the children will be away from school.

We are currently on a hiatus from this ministry due to a lack of volunteers.

On-going needs

Volunteers: The program depends on volunteers to do the following:

  • Pick up food from the Food Bank of the Rockies

  • Pack bags and Totes,

  • Deliver Totes of bagged groceries to the school,

  • Pick up empty Totes, and

  • Marketing

Please contact the church if you might be interested in volunteering for this program. Most tasks take approximately one hour or less to complete.

Donations: There is also an ongoing financial need to support Totes of Hope. The cost of providing the program is $150 per child per school year. Some members and friends of Holy Redeemer sponsor one child or more for a year. Others have pledged an ongoing monthly amount to be applied to the Totes of Hope fund. Your donations to the Totes of Hope fund may be made by checks or cash. Checks should be made payable to “Holy Redeemer” with “Totes of Hope” written in the memo line. All contributions are tax deductible. It only costs around $2.65 to feed a child for the week so any amount that is given can make a big difference in a child’s life.
